The Bucket List is #1

The Bucket List is number one

The Bucket List has taken the top spot at the box office. It opened wide on Friday after a limited release in LA, NY and Toronto and took 19.5 million according to estimates. Warner Bros.' exit polling indicated that 70 percent of Bucket List's audience was over 35 years old and 58 percent was female. The film received a very positive A- rating overall from it's audience. Although movie critic reviews had been mixed audiences have loved the film, 95% of the weekend audience members surveyed rated the picture "excellent" or "very good" and now it is a hit! The Bucket list European PosterI hope you are all enjoying the festive season! The Bucket List has opened in limited release in Toronto, Los Angeles and New York for those of you lucky enough to live in those centers, there is ticket and showtime info on the official site. The movie will open wide on January 11th.

Movieweb has a contest with The Bucket List merchandise so click here to enter for a chance to win!

There are a range of reviews over at rottentomatoes.com both good and bad. Interestingly the film critics have been less positive than the actual movie-going audience, so I 'm looking forward to seeing this for myself. Reviews will contain spoilers so if you don't want any preconceptions or too much knowledge of the plot lines going into the movie, don't read them.

For fans outside of the US and Canada here is IMDB's list of release dates.

What do you think of the European one sheet? I think I prefer it to the US design. Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

There is a nice interview with Jack Nicholson discussing The Bucket List in Variety. He says his favorite film is "Brando in 'On the Waterfront.' I was an assistant manager in the theater in New Jersey when it played, so I probably saw it 12 or 15 times. He was the guy of my high school generation."

You can also read another interview with Jack Nicholson and co-star Morgan Freeman from the NY Journal. Make sure you check out the great accompanying photo with the piece.

The Bucket List Premiere Update - Warners Bros have announced the Premiere will be held Sunday, December 16 at the Cinerama Dome. Red carpet arrivals will begin at 4pm. More details online here.

The Bucket List Update

The Bucket List will open in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto on December 25th before going wide January 11. So it seems like a good time for an update.

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in the Bucket List

Awards season is under way with the National Board of Review having given out the first accolades yesterday. The Bucket List was included in their top ten films, you can see the full list online here.

The official website for the film has been updated and you can view photos and John Mayers music video from the film.

There is a brief interview with The Bucket List's director, Rob Reiner over at Variety. Reiner says of Jack Nicholson, "Jack is a true artist and he approaches everything as an artist. He gets richer and better with every performance." You can read it here.

There is a positive review *with mild spoilers* online here and I'm sure there will be more soon.

Finally, last week Jack Nicholson gave a Q & A at a screening of The Bucket List for the Screen Actors Guild Nominating Committee here is a write up of the event from the LA Times -

Warner Bros. had to turn away at least 50 Screen Actors Guild members at an overflowing screening of "The Bucket List" at the TV Academy in North Hollywood last night.

About 600 strong filled every seat and then some for the rare – and we mean rare -- opportunity to see Jack Nicholson do a Q&A.

The session immediately followed the very enthusiastically received showing of his latest film, costarring Morgan Freeman and directed by Rob Reiner who joined Nicholson on stage for the SAG Nominating Committee event.

When we introduced Nicholson he came out a bit surprised to see such a large crowd.

Apparently no one had explained to him exactly what he was getting into.

"I have to tell you, I thought they said I was going to be talking to a committee of a few actors. I had no idea it was this," he said, to lots of laughter.

Paparazzi made it difficult for him to get through the doors, but once he did, he took off on his own for what can only be described as a "Jack tour" of the premises. Eventually, he emerged onstage and settled down for a 45-minute chat with the actors voting on this year's SAG nominations.

On the topic of awards, he said he never knows what to expect whenever he is nominated for an Oscar (it's happened 12 times with three wins, a record for male actors). He did allow that every time he loses he thinks he's been "robbed."

Nicholson also kept needling Reiner, saying the director didn't have the faith initially that he could play the colonel in the first collaboration between the two friends, "A Few Good Men."

He also mentioned that he loves the Coen brothers and would have been perfect for "No Country for Old Men."

The crowd ate it all up. Not a single person left and Jack graciously signed autographs for another 20 minutes after the Q&A.

Asked by an actor in the audience if he was planning on making a "bucket list" of his own, Jack explained that at age 70 he still planned to live a little longer and didn't need to make a list of things to do before he dies (unlike the characters in his more recent film).

"If I can find something I want to do tomorrow, I am just gonna go out and do it, baby," he said.

Judging from the reaction to him and the poignant comedy/drama, Warner Bros. could find themselves not only with a major hit picture but a surprise awards contender once the film opens on Christmas Day.

Jack Nicholson in Parade

Jack Nicholson in Parade

Jack Nicholson is featured in the Dec 9 issue of Parade. You can read an interview with Jack at parade.com

Here's an excerpt from Jack Nicholson's recent interview with Golf Digest

Jack Nicholson in Golf DigestActor Jack Nicholson says he likes to hit range balls — lots and lots of them — into that canyon out back of his Beverly Hills home.

"Hundreds. Thousands," he told Golf Digest. "Initially I planned to retrieve them, but there got to be so many. A friend of mine, [actor] James Spader, made his way down there through the woods and weeds, and James took a picture. It looks like outer space down there, golf balls everywhere, like a planet peppered with golf balls."
Ever worry about hitting, say, a snake or scorpion out there?

"I hope not. Live and let live, y'know? One time I lashed a ball, and a homeless guy came running out of the weeds, yelling."
